Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is a disease of the supporting structures around your teeth including the gums, ligaments and bone. There are many factors that can lead to periodontal disease, but most can be controlled with proper oral hygiene and routine dental care.

Dr. Jake Tall, the team at Ski Hill Dental and a team of trusted specialists can help identify and manage your periodontal disease. Schedule an appointment today to learn if you have periodontal disease and learn how it can be managed.

Your teeth are held in place by three supporting structures; bone, periodontal ligaments and gums. Bone is the main support. Between the tooth root and the bone is a ligament called the periodontal ligament. This ligament holds your tooth onto the bone and also acts as a “shock absorber” to everyday forces. Finally, the gums surround the bone and teeth to provide support to the teeth and protection to the bone and ligaments.

Frequent cleanings with a dental professional are crucial to maintaining harmful bacterial levels that lead to periodontal disease. There are certain bacteria that irritate the gums and cause them to recede (dissolve/go away).Your teeth may appear perfectly clean, but if the right flora or harmful bacteria are present, you may have periodontal disease. Plaque and tarter build up from food debris can also lead to an environment or harmful bacteria that cause the gums to recede. As your gums recede, the ligaments and bone supporting the teeth also recede, leaving your teeth with little to no support.

Scaling and Root Planing

Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing): A deep cleaning is used when there are signs of periodontal disease. During a deep cleaning, the plaque buildup above and below the gum surface that cant be removed with a toothbrush is removed with an ultrasonic instrument and metal curettes. Additional plaque is removed and the tooth surface is polished with a rubber cone and abrasive paste. Tooth brushing and flossing techniques, as well as any additional educational information, is presented to each patient to ensure optimal oral health.

A two-week follow-up appointment will be needed to evaluate the health of your gums. After a deep cleaning is performed, you will either be on a three- or four-month follow-up schedule for periodontal maintenance appointments until signs of periodontal disease diminish. Schedule your appointment today to learn if you're are a candidate for scaling and root planing.

Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening may be necessary to save your tooth. When decay gets too close to your gums and underlying bone structure, a small amount of bone might need to be removed to predictably lower the levels of your gums.

This allows Dr. Jake Tall to efficiently remove the decay and restore strength to your tooth. Schedule an appointment today at Ski Hill Dental to learn if crown lengthening will be needed to save your tooth.

Video: Crown Lengthening Due to Decay

Your body naturally regulates the amount of gums present between your bone and a filling material on your tooth. If the filling material is too close to your bone, your gums may become inflamed and irritated, leading to recession.

Crown lengthening allows Dr. Jake Tall to control the amount of gums between your bone and the filling material to avoid unpredictable gum recession.
